Quali novità ha annunciato Toronto?
I due scioperi WGA e SAG-AFTRA non fermano la 48a edizione del Toronto International Film Festival, che ha annunciato i primi 60 lungometraggi in quello che dovrebbe essere un programma di oltre 200 titoli. L’anno scorso contava circa 260 lungometraggi. Tra le strategie quella di invitare registi-attori e puntare sui film americani e quelli indipendenti.
Le anteprime
A Toronto ci saranno le anteprime internazionali di The Holdovers di Alexander Payne che ritrova Paul Giamatti diciannove anni dopo Sideways e del biopic Rustin di George C. Wolfe che sarà distribuito da Netflix,il dramedy Dumb Money di Craig Gillespie e Pain Hustlers di David Yates in anteprima mondiale, Wildcat di Ethan Hawke con la figlia Maya Hawke nel ruolo della scrittrice Flannery O’Connor, il dramma musicale Flora and Son di John Carney già presentato al Sundance.
Toronto Film Festival 2023: le assenze
Macheranno titoli che molti aspettavano ad esempio Dune: Part 2 e il musical The Color Purple, molto probabilmente le loro uscite in sala saranno posticipate, per l’assenza quasi certa degli interpreti.
I film indipendenti
Secondo Variety alcune star stanno lavorando per ottenere deroghe da SAG-AFTRA per fare stampa per film finanziati in modo indipendente o che cercano distribuzione. Altri studi indipendenti stanno solo portando avanti i loro piani di rilascio, sperando che venga raggiunta una risoluzione prima del debutto dei loro film.
Toronto Film Festival 2023: prime mondiali
Il Toronto film festival non rinuncia alle prime mondiali di grande richiamo, tre i titoli che verranno proiettati ci sono, “Dumb Money” di Craig Gillespie, con Paul Dano e Pete Davidson; “Lee” di Ellen Kuras, con Kate Winslet; “Pain Hustlers” di David Yates, con Emily Blunt e Chris Evans; il thriller politico di Michael Winterbottom “Shoshana”; e due documentari musicali, “In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon” di Alex Gibney e “Hate to Love: Nickelback” di Leigh Brooks, Alexander Payne con “The Holdovers”.
Venezia 80
Domani 25 luglio verrà annunciata la selezione della 80/a edizione (30 agosto – 9 settembre) e dopo aver dovuto cambiare in corsa il film di apertura Challengers di Luca Guadagnino con Zendaya per via dello sciopero di attori e autori dei sindacati Sag-Aftra. La Mostra del cinema si aprirà invece con “Comandante” di Edoardo De Angelis con Pierfrancesco Favino. Non vediamo l’ora che inizi la conferenza per sapere quali titoli saranno presenti e se Barbera avrà attuato un piano b, come da più si vocifera, e se ci saranno le pellicole americane.
